X-ray Study of the Intermediate-Mass Young Stars Herbig Ae/Be Stars

چکیده
We present the ASCA results of intermediate-mass pre-main-sequence stars (PMSs), or Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAeBes). Among the 35 ASCA pointed-sources, we detect 11 plausible X-ray counterparts. X-ray luminosities of the detected sources in the 0.5–10 keV band are in the range of log LX ∼30−32 ergs s , which is systematically higher than those of low-mass PMSs. This fact suggests that the contribution of a possible low-mass companion is not large. Most of the bright sources show significant time variation, particularly, two HAeBes MWC 297 and TY CrA exhibit flare-like events with long decay timescales (efolding time ∼ 10−60 ksec). These flare shapes are similar to those of low-mass PMSs. The X-ray spectra are successfully reproduced by an absorbed one or National Research Council, 500 Fifth Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001, USA

Further X-ray detections of Herbig stars
Context. The interpretation of X-ray detections from Herbig Ae/Be stars is disputed as it is not clear if these intermediate-mass pre-main sequence stars are able to drive a dynamo and ensuing phenomena of magnetic activity. Alternative X-ray production mechanisms, related to stellar winds, star-disk magnetospheres, or unresolved late-type T Tauri star companions have been proposed. Aims. The c...

Intermediate dispersion spectroscopic observations of 37 Herbig Ae/Be stars reveal that the equivalent widths of their [OI]λ6300 andHα emission lines, are related to their nearinfrared colours in the same fashion as the T-Tauri stars. Such a correlation strongly supports the idea that the winds from Herbig Ae/Be stars arise in the same manner as those from TTauri stars, i.e. through accretion d...
متن کاملNEW PERSPECTIVES ON THE X-RAY EMISSION OF HD 104237 AND OTHER NEARBY HERBIG Ae/Be STARS FROM XMM-NEWTON AND CHANDRA
The origin of the X-ray emission from Herbig Ae/Be stars is not yet known. These intermediate-mass pre–mainsequence stars lie on radiative tracks and are not expected to emit X-rays via solar-like magnetic processes, nor are their winds powerful enough to produce X-rays by radiative wind shocks as in more massive O-type stars. The emission could originate in unseen low-mass companions, or it ma...
متن کاملDo Herbig Ae / Be stars have discs ?
Hα spectropolarimetry on Herbig Ae/Be stars shows that the innermost regions of intermediate mass (2 – 15 M⊙) Pre-Main Sequence stars are flattened. This may be the best evidence to date that the higher mass Herbig Be stars are embedded in circumstellar discs. A second outcome of our study is that the spectropolarimetric signatures for the lower mass Herbig Ae stars differ from those of the hig...
متن کاملThe onset of cluster formation around Herbig Ae/Be stars
The large body of near infrared observations presented in Testi et al. (1997; 1998) are analysed with the aim of characterizing the young stellar clusters surrounding Herbig Ae/Be stars. The results confirm the tendency of early Be stars to be surrounded by dense clusters of lower mass “companions”, while Ae stars are never found to be associated with conspicuous groups. The transition between ...
